Hot Water or Boiler Heat

Some Staten Island Homeowners use a Boiler. Water is heated in boiler, usually to between 160 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Pumps circulate the hot water through pipes in the building. This heated water warms radiators placed in the rooms. These radiators, in turn, warm the air in the room. Bob Mims technicians are able to help diagnose problems and perform routine boiler maintenance. By far the worst strategy is reactive boiler maintenance. These are repairs made only when there is a failure. There is no planning, no anticipation of repairs that may be required to prevent a failure. The costs associated with these boiler repairs are typically high in labor.

On the other end of the boiler maintenance spectrum is a proactive maintenance program. This type of maintenance approach uses scientific testing techniques and analysis to anticipate and correct, by either repair or replacement, problems before they arise. Real time monitoring has contributed greatly to the ability to view and respond to changes in boiler operation and overall process performance. This will help keep the system operating at full capacity and will save future headaches and issues.

Bob Mims has the expertise to keep your boiler system running smoothly and efficiently.

Steam Heat

Steam heat is an older style heating system found in some Staten island homes, typically installed in buildings constructed before the 1950s. Water is heated in a boiler until it becomes steam. Steam, which is a gas, rises through the pipes into radiators. The steam causes these radiators to become hot. These radiators warm the air in a building.

Steam heat is noisy, and buildings with steam heat often warm unevenly. The pipes used with steam heat have a long life expectancy, and the piping typically used for steam system is not readily converted to hot water heating systems. If your house was built with steam heat, it is probably not cost-effective to convert it to hot water heating.

Although steam heat is rarely installed in new homes or small buildings, it is often the heating system of choice in a high-rise building. This is because of the difficulty in pumping hot water to the upper levels of a high-rise building.

Use Radiant Heat to Warm Your Home

Many Staten Island homeowners prefer (radiant) hot water heat, because the radiators are small, the system typically quiet, and it can be easily divided into multiple zones. Hot water heat has made steam heat obsolete in homes and smaller buildings. Radiant heating systems involve supplying heat directly to the floor or to panels in the wall or ceiling of a house. The systems depend largely on radiant heat transfer: the delivery of heat directly from the hot surface to the people and objects in the room via the radiation of heat, which is also called infrared radiation. Radiant heating is the effect you feel when you can feel the warmth of a hot stovetop element from across the room. When radiant heating is located in the floor, it is often called radiant floor heating or simply floor heating.

Radiant heating has a number of advantages: it is more efficient than baseboard heating and usually more efficient than forced-air heating because no energy is lost through ducts. The lack of moving air can also be advantageous to people with severe allergies. Hydronic (liquid-based) systems use little electricity, a benefit for homes off the power grid or in areas with high electricity prices. The hydronic systems can also be heated with a wide variety of energy sources, including standard gas- or oil-fired boilers, wood-fired boilers, solar water heaters, or some combination of these heat sources.

Whether you are in need of installation of a radiant heating solution or your already existing system requires maintenance, Bob Mims can meet your needs.
