How Ductless Systems Work

Ductless systems have an outdoor unit, just like any conventional air conditioning system, or heat pump. It’s designed just like a heat pump, in that refrigerant moves heat from place to place. Heat is absorbed from the air inside of a home and moved to the area around the outside unit as part of the heat exchange process (refrigeration) that cools your home. As temperatures drop, the ductless heat pump is capable of absorbing heat from the outdoors and bringing it inside.

The difference is in the way a ductless system is installed. You don’t need to have ducts to move air around the home because there are individual blower units mounted on various walls of the home—not just one central blower. Each outdoor unit can typically accommodate up to 4 indoor units.

The Advantages of Going Ductless

Ductless mini splits (as they’re referred to in the industry) have so many advantages to homeowners without any ductwork currently in the home. Take a look!

  • No major renovations – One big reason to go ductless is that you can have the equivalent of central air conditioning (and heating) without having to make major, time–consuming renovations that require careful planning and leaving part of your home unusable. The only "renovation" involves drilling a small hole in the wall to feed a thin refrigerant line through.
  • More efficient than single–room units – Ductless air conditioning is far more efficient than most window units, portable AC units, and room air conditioners, which aren’t subject to the same federal regulations as ductless units and central AC.
  • Can cool or heat the whole home – You can get cooling and heating for your entire home if you have enough indoor units, and you can control them all from a central thermostat (and from individual thermostats for each zone).
  • Zoning for optimal comfort – Separate indoor units mean that you can control each one independently of the others. If someone in a bedroom wants to keep it cooler than the living rooms, they’ll have that option!
