Are Your Ducts Causing Problems?

Let’s all agree on one thing: we do take our ventilation systems and ducts for granted. Without our cooling and heating units, we would be unable to bring our houses to comfortable temperatures. Hence, it is very important that we make sure that there are no ducts causing problems in our homes.

Poorly designed, dirty, old, and unmaintained ducts can cost you a lot of money and affect your comfort. They can also result in higher electricity bills! To help you tackle this issue, we have compiled a list of 4 common duct problems you need to fix immediately.

1. Bad Odors

Are your heating and cooling system units smelling bad? This unpleasant and unwanted smell might not be coming from your unit but from your ductwork. It is quite common for moisture to build up in your ducts. After some time, moisture can become the breeding ground for mold, mildew, and other scary microorganisms.

These funky smells that are mostly a result of moisture and mold growth can even cause health and respiratory problems such as asthma. Metal ducts are usually safe from this problem, but ducts made of drywall, sheetrock, or carbon-based materials are particularly vulnerable to bad odors.

2. Air Quality Issue

One of the most common duct problems, other than bad odors, is poor air quality. If you feel like the air quality has declined, you need to get to the bottom of the problem and contact us for duct repair in Staten Island.

When a duct is filled with moisture and organic material like mold, contaminated air and allergens can surround your breathing space. Additionally, smog, dust, pollen and other forms of outdoor pollution, such as pet dander and dangerous compounds from cleaning fluids, paint, varnish, printer ink and pesticides, can circulate through your ducts and get pushed into rooms, thereby, ruining the air quality.

3. Poor Airflow

Are your ducts causing problems in airflow? We might know the reason behind this! When ducts are clogged up or dirty from the inside, your heating and cooling system might not work as well you want it to. If your ducts are leaking, a portion of the conditioned air will not make it to the portion of your house where you need it.

If you examine your vents while trying to determine the source of these airflow problems, you might notice a lack of air blowing from your ventilation system. You will also notice that the air is stuffy because not enough air is circulating the house.

4. Leaks in the Ductwork

On average, a home loses more than 20% of the air that circulates through its ducts. This causes major inefficiencies in the heating and cooling systems. The solution to this problem is checking your ducts for leakages and getting the leaks sealed.

Once you get your ducts fixed for leaks, you will lose a lesser amount of air. This will allow your heating or cooling unit to easily bring your house to a pleasant temperature with less effort. It is important to quickly get fix leaks since they can allow outside pollutants to enter your home through your ducts, which can ruin your air quality.
