4 Reasons Why Your AC Isn’t Running

woman-in-front-of-fanYou come home from a day out in the heat and all you want to do is cool off inside your nice, air-conditioned home. Once you walk in the door though you realize that your AC system has other plans. Your plan was for it to run like usual and keep things comfortable. Your AC unit’s plan was to…not do that.

This is a problem. Your air conditioning system isn’t running which means no cool air. Why is your system refusing to work and how can you get it operating again? We have the answers to these questions and the services to help.

4 Causes of an AC Breakdown

Having a broken down air conditioner is never good–especially when the summer heat hits. If your system has stopped operating, you may be wondering if you need a replacement or if things can be fixed with an AC repair in Staten Island. This depends of course on the cause of the breakdown, among other factors. Consider the following possible causes:

  1. Thermostat problems: Your thermostat is responsible for telling your air conditioner when to run and how long to run for. IF there is a miscalibration in the thermostat, it won’t send the right signals to your AC so it may not turn on until the house is WAY too hot. On the other hand, if there is a disconnect between the thermostat and the AC, your system may not receive any commands to turn it on at all. Thankfully, a repair or replacement of your thermostat should fix this.
  2. Issues with the circuit: Electricity is essential to your air conditioner–it can’t operate without it! So if your AC turns on and the circuit trips, which shuts off the flow of electricity to it, then you have a problem on your hands. Try resetting the circuit to get things running again. If the circuit continues to trip after the initial reset, something is causing a bigger problem that could pose a safety hazard to your home. Leave the system off and call us for repairs!
  3. Low refrigerant: Refrigerant is the substance your AC uses to transfer heat out of the air in your home and cool things off. If you have a refrigerant leak, the AC may still function for a while though it will do so with decreasing effectiveness as time passes. If the refrigerant gets low enough, your AC simply won’t run at all. Schedule a repair to address a refrigerant leak ASAP or you may be facing an early replacement instead.
  4. A dead compressor: Without your compressor, you can’t get refrigerant to cycle through your system and absorb heat. Unfortunately, in most cases, a dead compressor is something that will require a full system replacement.

It isn’t your job to diagnose the cause of your air conditioner’s breakdown of course–that’s our job! All you need to do is reach out to us for help. We can assess and diagnose the issue and let you know what your best options are to get your home cool and comfortable again.
